The Ultimate Guide: Cruelty-Free Beauty Brands (2022)

This list has been updated for 2022! There are currently three cruelty-free organizations that can certify brands to obtain official cruelty-free status: PETA, Leaping Bunny, and Choose Cruelty-Free. Since gaining a cruelty-free certification is optional, not all brands go through the process to obtain it. Unfortunately, this is how a lot of cruelty-free companies fall through the cracks and not many people know they are cruelty-free. In addition to that, the cruelty-free certifications mentioned above also does not cover the same grounds. They are three different organizations with different ideas of what “cruelty-free” really means. This requires us to do our own research and sometimes go to the brand directly to ask them about their cruelty-free policy to see if it aligns with our specific views on cruelty-free.

So I have done just that, researched companies to find out their cruelty-free policies. Since the cruelty-free market demand is rising, many companies have also started to post this information on their websites, specifically on their FAQ pages, since cruelty-free policy has become a popular inquiry.

This list includes beauty brands that are cruelty-free and meet ALL of the following criteria:

  1. They do not test on animals during any part of production
  2. They do not order materials from any third party vendor who tests on animals
  3. They do not have third parties test their products on animals on their behalf
  4. They do not sell their products in countries that require animal testing (i.e. mainland China)
  5. They are not owned by a parent company who tests on animals

Below is an A-Z list of 100% cruelty-free beauty brands. Many of these brands offer vegan products as well, and I have listed which brands are 100% vegan.

I was very happy to see that the brand I’ve been using for years now (Chi Chi) is cruelty free so I am definitely going to keep buying from them :). Once again thank you, let’s put an end to animal testing and cruelty!!!!

    Hi, thanks for all the good info.
    I noticed Alba Botanica is on your cruelty free list & they’re owned by Hain Celestial, which also owns Jason, Queen Helene, & Avalon.. just wondered why you didn’t include those as well?
    And I believe Renpure would qualify for the cruelty free list if you want to check them out. Take care 😊

    MooGoo, an Australian brand, is cruelty-free, no testing brand too as far as I know 🙂
    I’ve completely switched from Drunk Elephant to MooGoo, as they also have lots of nice (and natural) actives, moisturisers, ect. They even have a natural makeup line (Dusty Girls).

    I’ve been cruelty-free for almost 30yrs, when just a handful of cruelty-free beauty and hair products were available, and only at health food stores. I know the movement has been growing for quite awhile, but it truly warmed my heart to scroll through your extensive list. Excellent job!!! Unlike Michael, I am SO glad you excluded any brands owned by a larger company that still tests on animals. It saddens me to see cruelty-free labels plastered around the big cosmetics stores knowing that many people are being totally deceived.

    Nice comprehensive list. I’m glad to see some of my favorite brands listed! Do you have a similar list that includes country of manufacture? I was surprised to receive some Laura Geller products (holiday edition) manufactured in China. Thanks!

      I do not but it’s something I can work on! Fortunately, there are no animal testing requirements for products *made* in China, only if they are sold in China. 🙂

It is amazing that you included all three of the cruelty free organizations in detail so us as shoppers can understand what those little logos mean and we can make better decisions on which brands to purchase.       Pureology is on the BRANDS TO AVOID list because they are owned by L’Oreal, a parent company that tests on animals. They are not 100% cruelty-free per the Free The Bunnies standards.

    My daughter found a product line called Florence by Mills and I would like to verify if it is cruelty free. I’m finding some info online saying it is but would like to make sure.

    Hi! Michael Todd Beauty is cruelty free, not owned by a parent company, and your article from 2016 has it listed as cruelty free!

      Are Foreo still cruelty free or are they now selling their skincare in China as well as the devices? They are no longer on other cruelty free lists.

    I was wondering if Lily Aldridge perfumes are cruelty free and vegan. I see the bottles are plastic free and she does say the fragrance is natural, but there isn’t much out there on current testing. I’d assume they are cruelty free, but it shouldn’t be so complicated to find out. Unless I am looking in the wrong places:)

        Now I need to ask them if all ingredients are and if there is third party testing. It will be much easier if they state that on their website.

      Covergirl is owned by a parent company that tests on animals, so unfortunately they are not Free The Bunnies approved. The FTB standard is that the parent company shall also be cruelty-free so that the brand has absolutely no ties to cruel animal testing.

    Yes, that makes sense. Thanks for the reply. I just wondered if it was just another ‘grey’ area, as with the brands that don’t test, but are owned by companies that test. In that case I wouldn’t use them. But if the ingredients issue is something that is accepted, then I guess Soap & Glory are okay to use! Thanks

    Hi, I note that Soap and Glory are on the list, however in their text about whether they test on animals, they do suggest that they can’t vouch for any of their ingredients. Is this normal? I’m a little at odds as to whether should use them or not. They’re pretty detailed and transparent, and their summary is this… “At Soap & Glory, we absolutely do not test our formulations on animals, however we can’t say that each and every ingredient that goes into them has not, at some point historically, been cleared for human use, by animal testing.” Is this pretty much across the board for all brands that are cruelty free?

      Joanne, this may be true for a lot of cruelty-free brands. SO many ingredients have been tested on animals in the past to be classified as safe, and there’s no way to reverse that. If the brand is not *currently* testing on animals in any way, it is a cruelty-free brand. An easy example is L’Oreal. They currently test on animals, but if they stop and become Leaping Bunny certified, they would then be cruelty-free going forward. I hope that makes sense!

      I’m so happy that I can make shopping cruelty-free easier for you! Yes, I have confirmed that E Nature is 100% cruelty-free and they have been added to the list. I have not been able to confirm if Medik8 is 100% cruelty-free at this time. I will let you know if I get more information from them. Thank you for choosing cruelty-free!

          Hi, I live in Thailand (I moved from the uk) and I was wondering if they have a ‘must test on animals policy’ I want to buy cruelty free but like I bought love beauty and animals and then found out to day that it’s not vegan. So many companies brand themselves but it’s a lie. I’m 15 and vegetarian as it’s almost impossible to go vegan in Thailand. I wanted to know if boots (the pharmacy) also tests on animals or if their brand made products do?

    PETA has Shea Moisture on their list of cruelty free. I’m really trying here lol there is a lot of contradictions. Any advise to make my vegan cruelty free product hunt easier? I just spent 60.00 on Shea Moisture to find it all n the brands to avoid list. 🙁

      Oh no! My biggest piece of advice would be to check my Cruelty Free Brands List and Brands To Avoid List before you make any purchases. Also, just remember that the only true cruelty free statement or certification you can fully trust that a brand has is Leaping Bunny. 💕 I hope that helps. Once again, just always check both of my lists.

    You’re missing a few brands!! Like Hourglass, Jeffree Star Cosmetics, Moonlit Skincare, Pistachè Skincare, Too Faced, & Urban Decay! I would love to see a list of brands that do test, also!

      Hi! This list only contains brands that are 100% cruelty-free. Too Faced and Urban Decay are owned by parent companies who test on animals so unfortunately they are not on this list, but I will be happy to add the others! For a list of brands that do test, search “brands to avoid” in the search box and that post will show up in the results. 🙂

        sorry but your logic is 100% stupid. a cruelty free brand that is owned by non cruelty free parent company is still considered to be cruelty free to me. i would still purchase from those types of cruelty free brands

          Michael, it is still a cruelty-free brand. I never said it wasn’t. But the cruel parent company technically owns the brand. So they get some of your money, hence you are supporting a non-cruelty free brand by buying from the brand they have acquired. I understand that there are many layers to what is considered “cruelty-free” and respect your opinion. But I would appreciate it if you would express your opinion in a less hateful way.

Btw you should raise your standards because buying from pseudo cruelty-free brands is still supporting animal testing, even if it’s indirectly. Your business would be greatly appreciated by company that’s making a genuine effort to be 100% cruelty-free.
